Power and Food
Mike has worked in international development for 20 years, with a particular focus on poverty reduction and small enterprise development, helping producers identify and access markets.   Mike joined the Fairtrade Foundation in 2012 from pioneering fair trade organisation Traidcraft Exchange, where he was Director of Policy from 2001. Previously a Board Director of the Fairtrade Foundation, and Chair (2005-08), Mike has also served on the Foundation’s Certification and Executive Committees.

Dr McGranahan  researches urban environmental issues. He has examined how urban environmental problems change as cities become wealthier. He was the convening lead author of the urban systems chapter of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. He worked previously for the Stockholm Environment Institute, leading their Urban Environment Programme.

 

He has authored a number of recent publications specifically on urbanization and food security:

McGranahan, Gordon (2011) Urbanization and food prices, Technical Briefing, IIED and UNFPA, London and New York; Satterthwaite.

McGranahan, and Tacoli (2010) Urbanization and its implications for food and farming, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B-Biological Sciences, 365 (1554) pages 2809-2820.
