Fair Trade Policy

In accordance with its position as an environmentally responsible institution Linacre College is committed to the use and promotion of Fairtrade ideals and products.

In addition to accounting for its impact on global climate change, Linacre is also taking steps to address its wider impacts on the developing world: it is the first Oxford College to gain full Fairtrade status. Linacre is breaking ground in addressing two of the most important global problems of the 21st century: climate change, and global inequality in trade and development. Through reducing its emissions, buying carbon offsets that specifically contribute to sustainable development, and by sourcing its food from sources that give farmers in the developing world a better deal, Linacre is not only producing graduates with degrees and knowledge on these issues, but is actively working to address them day-to-day in the running of the college.

As part of Linacre's wider environmental strategy the college is seeking to maintain certified Fairtrade Status through the implementation of the following polices:

- A steering group will meet once a term with the remit of discussing the dissemination of Fairtrade issues within College.

- Linacre makes Fairtrade products available in all college cafeterias and bars. Fairtrade tea and coffee is served at College meetings of Governing Body and meetings hosted by the Common room.

1) Why fair trade?

Fair Trade is a growing, international movement which ensures that producers in poor countries get a fair deal. This means a fair price for their goods (one that covers the cost of production and guarantees a living income), long-term contracts which provide real security; and for many, support to gain the knowledge and skills that they need to develop their businesses and increase sales. 2) Fair trade at Linacre

Linacre College and its student body support and are committed to campaigning for increased fair trade and trade justice. Yummy fair trade chocolate and biscuits are available behind the bar, while all the coffee and tea you drink in the Common Room is also fair trade!
