NEW SCHOLARSHIP FUND TO INCREASE EQUALITY
Title: The Women in Science Scholarship Fund
Purpose: To continue Linacre’s founding commitment to equality and with the support of several Old Members, this scholarship is being awarded on a competitive basis to an outstanding female student who has gained a place at Oxford University to study for a post-graduate degree in a science subject. The Scholarship covers £3300. We are very grateful to all the donors, and are thrilled that the Scholarship has now been implemented, for a 10-year period initially.
Further donations from Old Members, and other former or current members of the College (Fellows, students and staff) are most welcome.
Subject area: Science
Target: £85,000 for the endowment
This fund has been generously seed funded by Dr Sue Whiting (1972).
Fund status: after 1st 3 years’ scholarship paid out = £44,000
Donations: We can no longer accept card payments by e-mail. Please send the donation form (link on the right) to Linacre by post. Your financial security is extremely important to us. Thank you.
Alternatively, it is also now possible to make a secure online donation, specifically for the Women in Science Fund, via the University of Oxford online giving site here (link is external). American donors, however, should give through the Oxford North American Office site here (link is external). Select 'Linacre College' from the drop-down box, and put ‘Women in Science Fund' in the 'other areas' box.
If you have any questions, please contact the Development Office.
When I started my DPhil at Oxford, the split of men and women in my field was nearly even. But, through the course of the degree and later in the workplace, the percentage of women declined - often related to pressure from male supervisors and the need to prove yourself capable 'despite' being female. If we could remove just one stress from the minds of these aspiring young women, by providing them financial assistance, I believe we could increase the fraction of women who stay in the sciences. As diversity is the wellspring of innovation, sponsoring gender-diverse scientific research will make a brighter future for everyone.
- Dr Laura Richard (2006), DPhil Inorganic Chemistry
N.B. All donations from UK taxpayers can be augmented by 25% once we have received a signed Gift-Aid form from the donor. Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to secure additional money for Linacre, at no cost to yourself. A Gift Aid form is available via the second link on the right. If you have already signed a Gift Aid Declaration, please can you let us know if you cease to be a UK taxpayer. We would then know not to claim Gift Aid on your behalf. Thank you.
