Peter is Emeritus Professor of Linguistics at the University of Adelaide. He has an M.Phil. in Linguistic Science from Reading and a Ph.D. in Pacific Linguistics from ANU. After teaching at the Technical University of Berlin, he was University Lecturer in Linguistics and Fellow of Linacre College from 1979 to 1992. He has published extensively on Pidgin and Creole languages, ecolinguistics, pronoun grammar and language revival. He has more than 50 years of fieldwork experience in Australia and the Pacific. For the last 25 years he has worked with the language of the descendants of the mutineers of the Bounty on Norfolk Island where he is an honorary member of the Language Commission of the Council of Elders. His current project is a definitive dictionary of the Pitkern-Norf’k language.
