Linacre’s powerlifting society
The Linacre Ladies that Lift are cis women, trans women, genderqueer women, and non-binary or intersex people who train in powerlifting. We are people of all ages and abilities/disabilities. Beginners are always welcome.
This 10-minute video by filmmaker Guy Loftus gives an idea of what lifting with us is like: empowering and fun.
“Joining LLtL has been an amazing experience. I was initially hesitant to start powerlifting, but the warm welcome and community, stellar and safe coaching, and the progress made after only a few sessions ticked all the boxes for me. It’s been a standout experience during my time in Oxford.”
Why Powerlifting?
We lift for different reasons:
· for general fitness and confidence
· to compete in powerlifting with the BDFPA
· to get stronger for another sport
· to increase our independence as disabled people
· to prevent or reverse osteoporosis
If you’ve got questions about whether powerlifting is for you, you can email us here.
When do we train?
Linacre students, JRFs, Fellows and staff, and their spouses and partners train all year round, on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Students, staff and academics from the wider University can take available places on Saturdays.
Are you interested?
We welcome new members throughout the year. Your first session is free. Just fill in this short form. We’ll send you more information, and we’ll put you on our mailing list.
You don’t need special clothing; ordinary gym kit is fine. We’ve got sports hijabs to lend as well.
At your first lesson, you will be one of only a few new members, so our coach Shez Naqvi can give you a good foundation. After that, Shez will personalise your workouts, monitor your progress, and coach you from lesson to lesson.
Note for non-Linacrites: Michaelmas Term 2023
We are pausing new memberships for non-Linacre members until all the new Linacrites have had their first lesson. If you’re not a Linacrite, you can fill out the questionnaire, but you will only be able to begin once we’ve integrated the new Linacre lifters.
Weekly sign-up
You don’t have to commit to regular attendance. There is a weekly sign-up system, with priority for Linacrites.
