Dr Jennifer Hill (JRF) has been awarded £100k to study properties of antibodies generated following vaccination which protect from several major infections, including whooping cough and pneumonia. The funds are coming from a new network set up with support from the Medical Research Council to provide for research involving human challenge studies; that is clinical trials where volunteers are intentionally exposed to a pathogen to allow them to study the characteristics of a protective immune response and test vaccines. The funding is for one year in duration and brings together collaborators based in Southampton, London, Liverpool, and Kenya.
